AS A YOUNG MAN HE LEARNED THE TRADE OF CARPENTER AND

WHEELWRIGHT. AFTER FIRST MARRIAGE HE SETTLED IN PORTSMOUTH, OH,

IN 1837 MOVED TO MICHIGAN CITY, WHERE HE WORKED AS A CARPENTER,

BUILDING A SAW AND GRIST MILL FOR JAMES SCOTT, THIS IS WHERE HE

BEGAN THE STUDY OF MEDICINE. LATER MOVED TO WI.
