ELKHART -- Harold A. "Bud" Borneman, 85, of 1423 Greenleaf Blvd., Elkhart, died at 10:05 a.m. Sunday (Sept. 4, 2005) at Elkhart General Hospital. He was born Oct. 9, 1919, in Elkhart, to Herman and Lillian (Ross) Borneman. On April 20, 1943, in Bloomington, he married Sylvia Legg. She died in 1982. On Dec. 30, 1983, in Elkhart, he married Mary Jean Battjes. She survives, along with three daughters, Diane (Link) Llewellyn of Lancaster, Ohio, Kim Kobzowicz of Canton, Ohio, and Nancy (Mike) Murphy of Northville, Mich.; two stepdaughters, Mary Sue (William) Lamie of South Bend and Kathleen Ann (James) Van Vliet of Valparaiso; two stepsons, James (Socorro) Battjes of Houston, Texas, and Robert (Trudy) Battjes of Elkhart; nine grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; seven stepgrandchildren; six stepgreat-grandchildren; and one brother, Ross (Barbara) Borneman of Scottsdale, Ariz. Friends may call from 3 to 6 p.m. today at Hartzler-Gutermuth-Inman Funeral Home, 403 W. Franklin St., Elkhart. Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at St. John's Episcopal Church, with the Rev. Richard Kallenberg officiating. Burial will be in Rice Cemetery. Mr. Borneman graduated from Elkhart High School in 1937 and from Indiana University in 1942. He served on a mine sweeper as a U.S. Navy lieutenant in South America during World War II. He owned and operated Sunthimer's Hardware, retiring in 1986. He was a member of Sigma Chi fraternity, Elks Lodge, Elkhart Noon Rotary, a former member of Elcona Country Club, a former member of the board of directors of the Salvation Army and one of the founders of the Bringle Award.
