News Paper Obituary, January 29, 1892, Johnstown Paper A WOOD-CHOPPER KILLED Oliver Makin Crushed to Death Under the Limb of a Tree Oliver Makin, while felling a trees on the hillside above the BrownstownCrossing, Sixteenth Ward, was struck by a limb about 4 o'clock yesterdayafternoon and killed. The limb had struck him on the head and crushed himto the earth, and lay across his body when found, soon after theaccident. Squire Jackson, of Brownstown, was at once notified of theaffair, and an inquest was suggested, but he decided that such aproceeding was unneccessary, as the *** was evidently one of accident.The body was removed to his home at 8 o'clock that evening, which is onColeman Avenue, Seventeenth Ward. The body was prepared for burial this morning by Undertaker Muller. Deceased was born in Cambria County, near Belsano, in 1838, and in April1865 he was married to Sidney Dixon at Brookville, Jefferson County. Soonafter they moved moved to Ebensburg and from there to New Florence. Afterthe flood that came to this city, where Mr. Makin has been working eversince. About two months ago he started cutting timber for James S.Bracken, of Morrellville, at which he was working when killed. His wife, together with twelve children, all who are single but one ---Benjamin --- survive. The names are as follows; Hannah, Benjamin, Joseph,***(Bento?), Eliza J., Thomas, George W., ***(John?), Lizzie, Steel,Samuel, and Walter, two of whom are afflicted, one being deaf, the otherbeing deaf and dumb. He is also survived by three brothers and four sisters, namely: Issac,of the Twelfth Ward; John, of Stoyestown; David, of New Florence; Mrs.Nancy Kanter, of the Twelfth Ward; Mrs. Christian Seth, of this city;Mrs. Susan Brown, of Stoyestown, and Mrs. Hannah Craig of Clarion County.He has two half-sisters and a half-brother, whose names are as follows:Mrs. Louisa Michaels, of Morrellville; Mrs. Adaline Champeno, of Altoona,and George Makin of Morrellville. He servered three years in the Civil War, from October 8, 1861 to October8, 1864, as a Private under Thomas C. Williams. Company C., FirstBaltimore, Nineteenth Reginment, U.S. Infantry, and as to his characterhis discharge says he was good and faithful soldier. The funeral will take place tomorrow afternoon at 1 o'clock. Intermentwill be in Grand View. NOTE *** denotes partial unreadable on the microfilm
