BIOGRAPHY: Taken from "Our Family" compiled in 1981 by Carroll BAIRD (neeRUMPEL) Berthold Andreas Rumpel was born the 19th January 1914 about 12 miles west of Gravelbourg, Saskatchewan on the home
stead. He was the first son, fifth child, of Karl and Anna Rumpel. He received his eduction at Southey, Saskatchewan. After completing part of his grade 11 he started working at the garage in Southey.
In 1932 he started working as a truck driver and mechanic's helper. In 1932, Bert moved with his mother and two brothers to Vancouver, BC. The first six months in Vancouver, Bert worked in the wood y
ards. The job consisted of 'stabbing' wood with an axe for 25 cents an hour. This was considered a good salary. Following this, Bert worked as a truck driver until 1938. In July 1938 he moved back to
Saskatchewan and started working as an agent for McColl Frontenac Oil in Weyburn, Saskatchewan. In the spring of 1939, he returned to Southey where he was employed as an accountant at the garage where
he first started working. Bert had met Gladys Ellen Pennell in Vancouver and they were married October 7, 1939. On the 1st of March 1940, Bert rented a garage in Southey and started his own business.
He continued in this business until May 1945 when he bought into a partnership of another garage in Southey. On May 25, 1943, their first daughter, Sally Ann, was born. Their second child, a boy Fred
erick Carl, was born March 4, 1946. Shirley Ann, asecond daughter, was born April 16, 1947 to complete the family. The Bert Rumpel family moved to Vancouver in 1948 and lived there until1950 when they
returned to the Prairies. Bert was employed as the Manager of the CO-OP Garage for one year. In the spring of 1951 the family moved to Archerwill, Saskatchewan where Bert bought a garage and operated
'Rumpel's Garage - The Best Service in Town' until the fall of 1968. The children were all educated in Archerwill. Following graduation, Sally trained as a nurse at City Hospital in Saskatoon, SK. Fr
ed went on to complete graduate studies in Pharmacy, and Shirley furthered her studies in languages in Germany and France. In the fall of 1968, Bert sold the garage in Archerwill and he and Gladys mov
ed to Lloydminster, Saskatchewan where he worked in the automotive retail and wholesale business until he retired in the fall of 1979. Bert and Gladys sold their house in Lloydminster and retired to K
elowna, BC where they are presently living.
