Notes for this person
Moved to the US in 1882 (B2) or 1883 (CEN1900–1920). A supposedly 5-year old Diedrich appears on the passenger ship list with his parents in 1883. He became known as Ditrich H., David Henry, Dave, or D. H. Bredthauer. Hespent his first married years in Vinton Township, Valley County and near Elyria Nebraska. In 1904 he owned and lived on the south half of section 13 and the northeast quarter of section 24 in Independent Township in Valley County,owning also the northwest quarter of section 34 and the southwest quarter of section 27 in Elyria Township. In 1907 he was elected treasurer of Elyria Township. In 1908 they moved to Maiden Valley and in 1909 went to live in MiraValley. They bought the land in section 25 of Enterprise Township that had formerly belonged to Mary Brown of the Pennsylvania Colony era. He had the first electric light plant in Mira Valley, a Delco 32 volt. He had the secondcar in the valley, a 1911 Mitchell. He also bought the first vacuum cleaner in the valley for Mary, and the first radio that was sold in North Loup. He was naturalized in 1915. In 1917 they moved to a farm south of North LoupNebraska. In 1926 he owned the north half of the south half of section 25 and 320 acres in section 23, Enterprise Township, 400 acres in sections 19 and 30 in North Loup Township, 40 acres in the southwest quarter of the southwestquarter of section 36 (three fourths of a mile south of North Loup), and about 60 acres in section 1 of Independent Township, all in Valley County. Dave was treasurer for District 33 Sunny Side School, and in 1922 a director ofthe Farmers Grain and Supply Company. In 1930 Dave retired from farming and cattle-feeding operations for a while and did some traveling, including visiting the New York World’s Fair. They settled in Grand Island Nebraska and fedcattle for some time north of town. In December 1932 he was involved in a multiple-car accident near St. Paul that wrecked their car and severely cut his wife’s face. They made their final home at 710 West 2nd where now is a Pump& Pantry (formerly Standard Oil) station. He died of heart trouble.
CEN1900 gives his birthdate as JUN 1869, and immigration year as 1883.
