Dort schreibt sie: "John's comment that Joe and Hilde were married in New York City in 1930 brings a family story to mind. I'm putting it at the bottom of this note because it's not a happy story. According to my mother, Hilde had a boyfriend
in Germany, a relationship that was probably established before she came to the USA. In the late 1930s, after Lillian was born, Hilde went back to Germany to be with that boyfriend, and didn't return to America until the war was coming on.
Hilde always had a sour disposition, which my mother attributed to that broken romance, and she made life very unhappy for husband Joe and daughter Lillian. I've always felt that unhappy upbringing was the reason Lillian was never able to make a
career of the artistic talent common to so many in the Kreis family."
