LaGrange - Doris Joy Powers, 92, of LaGrange, formerly of Bristol and Union, Michigan, died at 6:55 p.m. on Tuesday, April 6, 2021, at Miller's Merry Manor, LaGrange, Indiana. She was born on Feb. 2, 1929, in Union, Michigan, to Claude Harvey and Blanche (Gushwa) Trout. On April 19, 1952, she married Gene W. Powers; he passed away in 1994. Surviving are a daughter, Erin Bowers of Bristol; two sons, Rob Powers of Union, Michigan, and Eric (Amy) Powers of Middlebury; 12 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren. She , Norma Jean Lightfoot. Doris grew up working on the family farm in Union, Michigan, until getting married and moving to Bristol. Upon her husband Gene's passing, she returned to the family farm now owned by her son, Rob, where she enjoyed gardening and spending quality time with her grandchildren. She was a 1946 graduate of Bristol High School and attended teacher training school in Cass County Michigan and Western Michigan College in Kalamazoo, Michigan. Doris was a teacher of multiple grade levels in one room country schools for eight years. She was a first-grade teacher at Baldwin Prairie School in Union, Michigan, a kindergarten teacher in the Bristol area for six years, and a substitute teacher for over 10 years. She also served as the church secretary and treasurer for nine years at Bristol United Methodist Church and worked as a receptionist for R.G. Horswell, MD, in Bristol for 16 years. Doris was a member of Oak Hills Ladies Golf League for over 30 years, a member of Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) with nine proven ancestors, and a member of Bristol United Methodist Church since 1952. She was a 30-year attendee of the Elkhart Women's Connection, the 2003 Bristol Homecoming Senior Queen, and served many years on the Bristol Election Board. The family will hold a graveside service at a later date in Oak Ridge Cemetery, Bristol, Ind. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to Miller's Merry Manor, LaGrange.
