Notes for this person
n 1697, Jacob purchased land in Monmouth Co. NJ. Jacob left a will dated 24 Apr 1719; proved 21 Mar 1720.
Jacob was once indicted with others for opposing the Royal Governor. They were indicted for "riotously assembling and assaulting the High Sheriff and his men, and beat and grievously wounded these said persons, took their swords from them, carried them away and kept them to the value of five pounds, money of this province, in breach of the peace and terror of the king's people." They were also further accused of "breaking up by violence, a court which convened at Middletown village March 25, 1701, making prisoners of Andrew Hamilton, the governor of New Jersey, the attorney general, and judges and county officers, and keeping them under guard at Middletown four days. During this time, there was no head to the government of New Jersey, and no officers to administer the law in Monmouth County. That all these outrageous and rebellious acts were committed for the sole purpose of releasing a pirate, one of Captain Kidd's men, from the custody of this court." Jacob Van Doren, although indicted and harassed for some time by the officers, was never brought to trial.
