Hiram Ellis came to Harrison County in 1871. Some of his brothers werealready settled here. He rented land the first year. Then he boughtafarm in Little Sioux township and, at the time of his death in 1888,owned 175 acres. Hiram was marriedto Eliza Porter, daughter of Jamesand Mary (Pettijohn) Porter from Pennsylvania.To this union, 10children were born, four of whom died in infancy: Mary LuellamarriedW.H. Hope of the Hope Drug Store; Oliver, James, Hannah Belle, WilliamC.and Margaret E., who married Dr. S. A. Caldwell.<br>After the death of Hiram, hisson, William C., continued to resideatthe old home with his mother for 13 years.The estate was then soldand divided among the heirs. William C. and his motherbought a farmof200 acres south of Little Sioux. Grandma Ellis continued to livewithWiliam until her death. She and her son were faithful members ofthe LittleSioux Methodist Church.<br>Bill Ellis never married, but took a great interestin the children ofthe Sunday School, continuing as superintendent for more than20years. He was an inspiring member of the Little Sioux Band at onetime, playinghis cornet. During the summer months, the music of hishorn floated over the adjoiningfarmlands as he practised on the backporch. Those who knew him well called him aman of high character andsterling qualities. Mr Ellis died in January 1929.<br>Little Sioux Hustler<br><br>Hiram Ellis, deceased, was a native of BrownCounty,Ohio, but becamearesident of Harrison County in March, 1871. The date ofhis birth wasApril 6, 1829. His parents were John and Hannah Martin Ellis, nativesof Ohio. Hirams early life was spent in the Buckeye State, and therehe received a common school education. He worked on his father
s farmuntil he became ofage, and in 1854 emigrated from Brown County, Ohio,to near Hennepin, Putnam County, Illinois, where he farmed until hecame to Harrison County, and rented a farmof Dave Gamet, inLittleSioux Township. The following year he purchased a farm onsection 2,Township 81 and now owns one hundred and seventy-five acresof land,one hundredacres of which are under the plow and allsurrounded by good fence.<br>March, 1851, was a new era in this man`s life, for it was duringthatmonth thathe married Eliza Porter, daughter of James. B. and MaryPettijohn Porter, who were natives ofOhio. By this marriage unionfive children were born; Luella, now Mrs. Hope; Maggie, now Mrs.Caldwell; Oliver J. of Wakefield, Neb; James P. of Louisville, Neb;and William C. at home.<br>Politically, our subject was identifiedwith the Republican party, andin religious matters was a member of the MethodistEpiscopal Church.He passed from the scenes of this life July 23, 1888, being sixtyyears of age.<br><br>Harrison County History pp. 908-9 published 1891
