It is found in Scotland from the mid-13th century, apparently broughtthere by a Norman family from Nottinghamand probably also by others around thesame time. However, it has occurred in medieval records in Ireland long before the advent of Scottish settlers in the 17th century and may have come from England where it is also long established.
