Note from Les Propes.
I have no proof that Nancy's last name is Hagan, after years of searching in and around Monroe Co. KY. I have not found any family's with the last name of Heflin. We know that Nancy's and John D's oldest son's middle name is Hagan (Barney Hagan Propes). It was common at that time to name a child's middle name after a wife's maiden name, as in John Dovel Propes & Elizabeth Dovel Propes. ElizabethDovel is the wife of John Propes married May 20, 1800. in Rockingham Co, VA.
There were a number of Hagan family's living in and around the Propes clan of early Monroe Co, and the Hagan's are still yet to this day living in Monroe Co, KY. So it is my thinking that Nancy, wifeof John D Propes, is a Hagan by birth..

Subject: Heflin/Hagan
Dear Lester,
My notes for Nancy Heflin/Hagan read as follows:
There is some question as to whether Nancy's maiden name is Heflin or
Hagan?
Note: Son Barney's middle name is Hagan. A Patent for Propes land in Mill
Creek, Monroe, Kentucky was surveyed for Arthur Hagan. The name Heflin was
given as mother's maiden name by her son Sylvanus Propes on his marriage
license to Susan (Clark) Burns second wife of Sylvanus Propes. Some twenty
or so years later. Nancy Propes died between 1850 and 1859.
Sylvanus Propes family Bible: Mother's given name listed only as Nancy.
Note: The name of Arthur was also used in the Propes family as well as the
Hagan family.
Other Family Notes: (My suppositions) John and Nancy had their first child
(that we know of) in December of 1824. That was probably the year of their
marriage.
The child was Martha Ann. Following the naming system used by families
from
the Virginia Settlement she would be named for her maternal grandmother.
There is a gap of four years before the next child was born. I believe a
son
John was born during this time period named for his paternal grandfather,
John Propes, Senior. He most likely died as an infant. (Have no proof of
this?)
In 1828 a daughter Elizabeth Dovel Propes was born, probably named for her
paternal grandmother, Elizabeth (Dovel) Propes. The fourth a son, Barney
Hagan Propes perhaps named for his maternal grandfather, Nancy's father,
thus causing speculation as to Nancy's maiden name? Heflin/Hagan. The
infant
John was probably not listed in Sylvanus' Bible records due to the early
birth and death? he may not have known of him?
These are my theories on the Heflin/Hagan controversy. What do you think ?
Best Wishes,
Lou Propes

Subject: Heflin's in Monroe Co., KY For What It's Worth...
I just completed a couple of searches on my main database which contains
over 7,400 Heflin's and was not able to find any of them who were born or
died in Monroe County, KY.

Plus updated information gathered since 1998.
Note on the email from Morgan Heflin by Les Propes; Preston Miller, myself and others believed Hagan was Nancy's last name. Again there is no proof of Nancy's name being Hagan just common sense and speculation.[ancestors of nancy hagan.FTW]
As with most of the children I assign to Red Arthur Hagan, the
relationship here is based on circumstantial evidence. First she has
children named Lydia Propes, Barney Hagan Propes and Arthur R Propes.
This certainly ties her to one of the Arthur Hagans. Black Art already
has a daughter Nancy whose relation to Black Art is solidly documented.
Moreover, in the 1830 Monroe Co census, John and Nancy Propes are living
next door to Red Arthur Hagan. Thus she is almost certainly a daughter
of Red Arthur and Lydia Hagan.[red arts descendents.FTW]

Title | Die Familien Schmiers und ihre Verwandten |
