Bessie Eyman was born at home in Mahaska Co. near the town of Oskaloosa, Iowa on May 1, 1895. She was the youngest child in a family of 5 children - she had two older brothers, Harry and Joe, and two olders sister, Annie and Mary.

When Bessie was a teenager, she and her sisters picked middle names for themselves. She chose the name Maude. (She later laughed at herself that she had picked Maude for her middle name.)

Bessie's mother died in 1912, when Bessie was 17.

Bessie married Ward Stutsman in 1914. They raised their three children - Ward Jr. (b. 1919), Katherine (b. 1922), and Phyllis (b. 1924) - in Moberly, Missouri. After Ward Jr. died in March of 1937from a blood disease, the family moved to Fullerton, CA.

Bessie worked for many years as the head cook for the sisters of St Joseph at Fullerton General Hospital on Amerige Ave. She retired in the early 1960's.

Having grown up on a farm, she never learned to drive. She did, however, occasionally sit down at the piano and play "The Bee Waltz" for us, a song she learned as a child.

Her daughters Katherine and Phyllis - also Fullerton residents - were very devoted to her and enabled her to live independently in her own apartment on West Whiting Ave. until her death in 1993 atthe age of 98.
