Birth:

He was born at 6 p.m. on the 8th of February 1775 in the village Schweikershain near Döbeln in Saxony in Germany. His mother was the then single Anna Maria Bemmann from Schweikershain. In his baptism record in the local church books is recorded that Anna Maria Bemmann said that Andreas Molde from the village Richzenhain in the nearby Waldheim parish is the father. (H3)

In 1910 Schweikershain had 636 inhabitants. It had a post office, a registry, a Lutheran church, a school for home science, chair and furniture factories and a brewery. (A1)

Childhood:

His mother married Johann Wilhelm Hoppens in 1777 in Schweikershain. Johann Gottfried was two years old then. (H3)

The family probably lived in the nearby village Waldenburg from 1777 until 1780. Wilhelm Hoppens' parents lived there.

In 1780, when Johann Gottfried (he was called Gottfried) was 5 years old, the family moved to the nearby village Schönerstädt. Gottfried was raised there. His stepfather was a cottager. (H4)

Work:

He was a cottager (German: Häusler).

Marriage:

He married the single Rosina Maria Hessel, who was from the village Meinitz in the nearby Leisnig parish, on the 3rd of February 1799 in the St. Matthai church in Leisnig. (H2)

They raised a family in Meinitz. (H2)

Death:

He died at 9 p.m. on the 25th of December 1822 in Meinitz. He was 47 years old and died of an inflammation and a fever (German: Entzündungsfieber). He was buried in the cemetery in Leisnig four days later. He left behind a wife and six children. Most children were still young, but one was already married. (H2)
