CHILDHOOD DISEASE Carol had smallpox as a girl. She and her mother were in quarantinefor quite some time. FAMILY HISTORY Carol went to college for one year at San Jose State College. Shethen went to work at Woolw orth's. While there, she worked at acounter next to the lunch counter, which John frequente d for hislunch. On August 23, 1940, he asked her to go the Coconut Grove inSanta Cruz to d ance to the music of Jan Garber. Never one to turndown an opportunity to dance, she accepte d. She never dated anyoneelse after that. Carol also worked at the American Trust Bank in San Jose. When shejoined John while he Washington s in the Army, she worked in the PXoffice in Mississippi and at the bank at Camp McCain. Sh e alsoworked with John in the Finance Office at Camp McCain. In Atlanta sheworked at the F irst National Bank of Atlanta. After having a family, Carol worked at home as a seamstress anddressmaker and was involve d in activities with her children (CampFire Girls, Boy Scouts, etc.). CITY DIRECTORIES In the 1940 City Directory for San Jose, Carol is listed as a clerk atFW Woolworth Co.; i n 1941, she is listed as a bookkeeper at AmericanTrust Co.
