George W. CORNELIUS

1. Biography George W. Cornelius was born in Jersey County, Illinois, February23rd, 1843, and lived there until his parents moved to Macon County.He enlisted in Company I,, 150th Regiment, Illinois Infantry onFebruary 9th, 1865 and served his country as a soldier in theCivilWar, in the Union Arym, until he was honorably discharged January16th,1866. On January 6, 1868, he married Mary Savilla Faulke inMonroe, Wisconsin, and lived in Illinois, until they came to ButlerCounty, Kansas, and settled on the homestead seven miles northeast ofWhitewater, October 30, 1870, where they made their home until movingto Whitewater three years ago (1915) and along with two sons enteredthe livery business. He died August 9, 1918 in the Newton, Kansashospital Saturday at the age of 74 years, and was buried in the PotwinCemetery Monday morning. George and Mary came to Kansas in a covered wagon, hunting game alongthe way. Mary would stand out on the prairie holding a white flag toattract the curious antelope while George would wait to shoot them.
