Obituary Harriet Ann Helmick Salyards Squier Clarinda Journal, Clarinda, Iowa, November 14, 1935 Harriet Ann Helmick was born Feb. 27, 1852 in Berrien county, Mich.She was the 8th child of Nathan Helmick (Born Aug 24, 1804, son ofJacob Helmick and Sarah Teeter) and Susannah Ross (born March 5, 1811,the daughter of Isaac Ross, 1762 - 1843, and Elizabeth Pembroke, 1772- 1855.) Her parents were married Sept. 20, 1835 - 100 years ago. Her oldestbrother, Sardius Ross, was born Aug. 10, 1836, died at Pensacola,Fla., in 1864; Joel Teeter, born 1838, died in California in 1863;Thomas James, 1840 - 1895, died in Minnesota. These three brotherswere born in Elkhart, Ind. Jess Erastus, born in Ohio, in 1841, diedin Taylor county, Iowa, 1858; Sarah Elizabeth, born in St. Josephcounty, Ind., 1843, died 1851, Berrien county, Mich.; Eli Dickson,born in Ohio, 1845, died 1863, Jefferson barracks hospital, St. Lous,Mo.; Elvina, born in Michigan, 1850, died in Taylor county, Iowa,1858; Daniel Mason, born 1853 in Michigan and died in Salt Lake Cityabout a year ago. She was married in 1870 to Mr. Salyards. To this marriage was born oneson, James H., now living in Taylor county, Iowa. She was again married in 1875 to J.N. Squier and to this marriage wasborn A.J. Squier of Clarinda and E.N. Squier of Villisca. All thechildren, with several of the grandchildren and one great grandsonwere present at the funeral. She was laid to rest in the Memorycemetery, by the side of her husband, who passed away in 1931. She came to Iowa about 1857 with her parents, who settled on a farmwest of where New Market is now. This was the postoffice and stagecoach stop, her father being postmaster during the Civil War. She toldmany incidents of people stopping with them - even Indians. Some timeafter the Civil War they moved to Old Manti, near Shenandoah, beingheld up for about a month after they got started by muddy roads alongwhere No. 3* is now and somewhere near Yorktown. She was over thissame road a few years after the paving was put in, making the samedistance now in less than an hour. She, with the family moved fromManti to near Chariton, where she was married to Mr. Squier, movingwith him to Montgomery Co., near Villisca, then finally to Page andTaylor counties where she has lived for nearly sixty years, havinglived in Braddyville, Bedford, Clarinda and New Market. Two years ago last March she suffered a stroke of paralysis and wasalmost helpless since then. The final stroke came on Tuesday, Nov 5,from which she could not rally, passing away at 12 o'clock, noon,Friday, Nov 8, 1935. She has been a member of the Methodist church formany years and always attended services when it was possible for herto do so. She leaves the three sons, seven grandchildren and four greatgrandchildren, other relatives and friends to mourn her passing. Shewas past 83. Services were held at the Pruitt Funeral Home, conductedby Rev. W.H. Meredith, pastor of the Clarinda Methodist church onSunday afternoon. Pallbearers included C.C. Suckow, Clyde Tinker, DelHolbrook, Arch Young, Laurel Green and Noel Squier. Music wasfurnished by Mrs. J.W. Slocum, J.B.M. Pruitt and Rev. W.H. Meridith.
