Adolf brach 1218 zum Fünften Kreuzzug ins Heilige Land auf und starb am 7. August 1218 als Kommandant der rheinischen und friesischen Belagerungstruppen vor Damiette im Nildelta an einer Seuche. Da er nur eine Tochter hinterließ, erlosch der Stamm Altena-Berg.
