Über Arnulfs Vorfahren einschließlich seiner Eltern ist nichts bekannt.
Arnulf, der aus fränkischem Hochadel stammte, wurde am Königshof in Metz erzogen. Nachdem seine Ehefrau Doda in Trier ins Kloster eingetreten war, ließ sich der Familienvater zum Priester weihen. Um 614 wurde er zum Bischof von Metz ernannt. Gleichzeitig war er weiterhin ein einflussreicher Berater bei Hofe, unter anderem für die Könige Chlotar II. und Dagobert I. 629 legte Arnulf das Bischofsamt nieder und lebte bis zu seinem Tod in Remiremont in den Vogesen, wo er sich um Aussätzige kümmerte.
