John HENDLEY

1. Served in a medical unit in Price's Regiment, U.S. Army, during the

Mexican War. He enlisted at Fort Levenworth, KS in 1846.

2. After the war he practiced medicine at Camden, Ray co., MO.

3. John's father died in 1854 in Liberty, Clay co., MO.

4. He had a brother, Israel Hendley, and five sisters.

5. He must have left Missouri in the spring of 1850 for he and his son

arrived in Solano co., CA on 9 Sep 1850, the day California became

a state.

6. Was the first clerk and recorder of Sonoma co., CA; he did not practice

medicine in CA but continued to use his medical title. He lived on the

farm he had purchased in 1851 until his death.

7. Hendley Street in Santa Rosa, CA was named for this family. In addition,

upon the death of Dr. Hendley, the Santa Rosa schools were closed and

the flags in town were lowered to half mast.
