Notes for this person
- Emigrated from VA to Guilford county, NC in 1766 and, from there to
South Carolina in 1783 settling on the Enoree River in the territory
known as District Ninety-Six and afterward part of Spartanburg county.
He was a progressive farmer for his day and time and a highly respected
citizen.
- Copied from page267 of the Brockman Scrapbook:
"From the 'Courier' of Charleston, SC
Died inSpartanburg, S.C., Joel Dean, in his 87th year. He was a
Revolutionary soldier, and was often heard to remark that he had
received more blessings from freedom than all he had done or could do
was worth; therefore he did not want anypension. He raised a large
family. He was a splended marksman and good hunter, and retained his
eyesight until his death."
-
His plantation in SC was on the Enoree River, near Reidsville, SC.
-
The Dean Cemetery is near Woodruff, SC on land now owned by Mr. W.K.
Brockman (2000). A note from Donna Nichols (Aug., 2001) gives the
location of this cemetery...and it's condition. "It is located on
property owned by Wendall Kent Brockman. The exact location is off
the Brockman/McCullin Rd., (SW) of Reidville about 1-1/2 miles east of
the Enoree River. Once you turn south off the Reidville Road onto the
Brockman/McCullimRoad. Continue on the Brockman/McCullim Rd past the
Brockman Rd turn off (1/2) mile. Off to the right is a red gate and a
lane. The cemetery is 1/2 mile down the lane. If you reach Rockridge
Dr. off the Brockman/McCullim Rd. you havegone too far. The cemetery
is overgrown, has been vandalized with head stonesbroken or stolen
and is inhabited by large snakes. The rock wall is still there."
