Walter actually was married twice. The wife that is listed, Helen Crawford, was his second wife. His first wife died in 1848. Her name was Margaret Stewart Cummins (daughter of Alexander and Margery Torrence Cummins), who was born on January 14, 1825 in Pennsylvania. They were married on November 5, 1846. They had no children. She died on December 9, 1848 and is buried in the Crabapple Cemetery in Linn County, Iowa (with her in-laws). Walter went on to marry Helen on January 3,1850.
