<p>Parents: Hans Jacob and Catheryn Sahn Dencklau. Nicklous was educated in Holstein, Germany. He came from Germany in 1868 at the age of 16. He came with his four brothers Fritz, Matthies, Jacob, and Christian information from obit. They arrived in New York directly going to Scott County, Iowa. Nic stayed in Eldridge, while the four brothers settled in Ft. Dodge, Iowa. He was a heavy setman according to Aunt Emily Amhof. In a 1894 platbook it says he had a farm in Winifield Township near Long Grove 159.69 acres, 150 acres in Sheridan Township by Eldridge, 85.32 and 40 acres in Lincoln Township. In 1905 it shows 160 acres in Sheridan Township. He was a wealthy land owner in his time. At retirement in 1905 he lived at 315 West Davenport Street, Eldridge, Iowa. Besides farming he was a stock raiser. In 1922 he built a house at 314 West Le Claire Road, Eldridge, Iowa. The cost of the house was $7,000.00. This was a lot of money back in 1922. It was one of the first housesto have indoor plumbing. The basement was hand dug and the dirt was taken away by horse and wagon. Ownership from March 21, 1923 to January 20, 1925. He died 19 days after his wife died. He was ainvalid since 1923, unable to leave his home during that time. He is buried by his wife, his daugther Mitilda known as Tillie, stepson William K. Klindt. He married the widow Amelia Diedrich Klindt. Children: Louis Klindt a stepson, William Klindt a stepson, Minnie a stepdaugter married to Ed Stoltenberg, Gustave, Emma married to Herman Moeller, Mattie A., married to Rudolph Amhof, Matilda never married, Laura married to Herman Grill, Otto, and Adolph married Lillie A. Moeller, still alive in 1994 at 100 years old. His estate was valued at $84,000.00 with personal property at $2,200.70.February 26, 1925 to January 15, 1927 the property was owned by Gus Denklau and Ed Stoltenberg executors of Nic's estate. This house was deeded to Matilda Denklau March 26, 1927 after her parents both died. Rudolph and Mattie Amhof purchased this house May 17, 1944 then Alvin and Mildred Amhof purchased it May 27, 1955 then Ronald and Bonnie Amhof purchased it June 28, 1972. Emma and Herman Moeller lived at the old homestead in Lincoln township. Warranty deed for 314 W. LeClaire Rd. dated July 1, 1904 in Nicklaus's name. According to a 1900 census, says came to USA in 1868, owned land, nodebts, farmed, 17 farm schedules. Surnames: Denklau, Diedrick, Klindt, Stoltenberg, Miller, Amhof Nick Denklau, a prominent citizen of Eldridge, Iowa, now living retired, wasborn in Germany on the 10th of May, 1852, and is a son of Jacob Denklau, who was a brick mason by trade and spent his entire life in the fatherland. Our subject was reared and educated in the land ofhis birth and in 1871 came to the United States, landing at New York. His destination, however, was Scott county, Iowa, and he came at once for several years.In December, 1877, Mr. Denklau was in marriage to Mrs. Amelia (Diedrick) Klindt, a native of Germany and the widow of Peter Klindt, a native of Germany and the widow of Peter Klindt. She was the owner of a farm of one hundred and twenty acres in Lincoln township, this county, and upon this property they began their domestic life, continuing to reside there for twenty-five years, when Mr. Denklau retired from active farming and removed toEldridge, where he now makes his home. Having prospered in his undertakings he was able to add forty acres to the home farm, making a tract of one hundred and sixty acres in Lincoln township, and in1894 he purchased a farm of two hundred and thirty-five acres in Sheridan township, to the cultivation and improvement of which he devoted his energies until he retired from active life. Besides his farm land he also owns town property in Eldridge.Unto Mr. and Mrs. Denklau were born six children, namely: Gust, a farmer of Sheridan township, who married Amanda Stoltenberg; Emma, who is now the wifeof Herman Miller, living on the old homestead in Lincoln township; Meta, the wife of Rudolph Amhof, of Lincoln township; and Tillie, Laura and Adolph, at home. By her former marriage Mrs. Denklau hadthree children: Louis; Minnie, now Mrs. Stoltenberg; and Wilhelm. All are residents of this county. The family is widely and favorably known and Mr. and Mrs. Denklau have a host of warm friends.
