Am 16. März 1278 war Wilhelm mit seinen Söhnen Roland und Wilhelm sowie Wirich I. von Frentz (andere Quellen: mit drei Söhnen) in der so genannten „Gertrudisnacht“ in Aachen, um für König Rudolf I. von Habsburg Steuern einzutreiben. Es kam zu einem Aufruhr, und Wilhelm wurde von Aachener Bürgern erschlagen.
