Richard W. Patterson, 88, of Rockford, passed away on Friday, Dec 11, 2015, in The Villa at PA Peterson. He was born Nov 22, 1927, in Rockford; the son of Charles and Helen (Yone) Patterson. Richard was a graduate of Rockford West High School and served in the US Navy from 1944-1954. He married Connie Carl on Jun 8, 1957, in Rockford; she predeceased him in 1994. Richard was employed with the USA Postal Service for over 38 years until his retirement. He was a member of Second Congregational Church, YMCA Retired Men's Club, where he was on the Board of Directors, the Northwestern Illinois Chapter National Railway Historical Society, the National Association of Letter Carriers, the National Association of Retired Federal Employees, the Rockford Jazz Society, and Madison Jazz Society and was a volunteer driver for Meals on Wheels. His favorite clubs were the Verdi, Venetian, Lombardi and Navy Clubs. Richard was an avid Bears and long-suffering Cubs fan and he enjoyed attending all his grandchildren's activities. He is survived by his daughter, Judith (Kenneth) Vazquez of Milwaukee, WI; sons, Mark of Nashville and David (Beth) of Rockford; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; sister, Barbara Chapman; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. Memorial service was held Friday, Dec 18, 2015 at Second Congregational Church, 318 N Church St, Rockford, IL 61101 with Rev. Rebecca White-Newgren officiating. Memorials may be made to Second Congregational Church. Olson Funeral Home, Rockford, IL assisted the family.
