"Samuel Johnston, of Chowan . ..summoned a meeting of the delegates at Hillsboro', on 21st August, 1775. . .This was the third meeting of the assembly of the people of North Carolina, opposed to the Royal Government. On motion of Richard Caswell, Samuel Johnston was elected President. . .On the 24th, the Congress declared that the people of North Carolina would pay their due proportion of expense in training a Continental Army, and appointed a committee to prepare a system of government for the province. . .Two regiments of five hundred men were raised by order of the Congress. . .For the First Regiment. . .Captains -- William Davis, William Picket, Henry Dickson, Thomas Allen, Robert Rowan. . ."
