Tailor, Surveyor, farmer. One of foremost in perm. settlement of Deerfield. Recorder for propr's. First Town Clerk. Clerk of the Writs in 1690 Wounded by Indians at Indian Bridge Ag. 18, 1695. Died Sep 6[18?], 1695. Oldest grave in Deerfield Aug 21,1695 fur men started from Deerfield to Mill river to go to mill, all on horseback & each with his bag of grain beneath him. "Joseph Barnard, Henry White, Philip Mattson, Godfrey Nims going to mill came to the place abt ye drain, & ye horse snuffing & being frightd one of yem cryd out, indians, indians, and yy turned abt & ye indians fird upon ym & woundd Barnard in left hand (one wrist broke to pieces) & one bullet in ye body & his horse shot down & then N(ims) took him up & his horse was shot down and then he was mounted behind M(attson) & came home." Narr. of Stephen William "Joseph B is dead, a humbling providence he being a very useful & helpful man in ye place so much under discomayement, & will ye more find & feel ye want of him" John Pynchon WAH-1995 note that his wife was carrying their 11th child when he died
