Richard BUSHNELL

He probably came to New England with his brothers, Francis and William, in about 1635. He apparently lived with Francis in Salem, Massachussets, until they moved subsequently to Connecticut, where it is reported that he was a member of the Ft. Saybrook garrison during the Paquot War. Richard Bushnell was granted a lot next to his father-in-law, Mathew Marvin in Norwalk, CT in about 1655. The estate of Richard Bushnell was probated on 6 Mar 1661/1662 in Norwalk, Fairfield , CT. The Court Record, p. 167, for 6 Mar 1661-2 reads " Will proven. And ye Relict being again married to William [sic] Adgate, Adms. is granted to ye sd Adgate, he giving to the Overseers sufficient Security to discharge the Legacies to the Bushnell Children" Errata in the front of volume 2 reads: "The entry in the Court Record is William Adgate, but from other authority it is evidently an error of the recorder." Richard's will is dated 1st Dec, 1659: "... I Richard Bushnell of Norwalk ... doe give and bequeath unto my dearly beloved wife Marcy Bushnell (corrected in the Errata at the front of Volume 2 to Mary) the 1/2 of whatsoever shall remain, & the other half I doe give and bequeath to my 4 children, allowing my 2 sones each of them L5 more than to my 2 daughters, & this I desire may be imployed for them until they shall bee of sufficient age or marryed, wch soever shall first come to passe. I request Matthew Marvin sen., Nathaniel Richards & Richard Olmsted of Norwalk to be Overseers. Richard Bushnell, Ls. Witness Alice Marvin, Jas: Cornish." Inventory was taken 17 Jul 1660 by Matthew Marvin, Nathaniel Richards & Richard Olmsted and amounted to L212-08-08.
