James was one of the recipients of his father's land known as Joshua's Tract However, it appears that he and Elizabeth lived at Franklin, Connecticut "of John Birchrd's six sons who lived to maturity, the second was James Birchard, who settled at Norwich West Farms, now Franklin. After the close of King Philips Wan in 1676, West Farms continued to grow. The sons of many of the first proprietors of Norwich, such as Lathrop, Hyde, Birchard, Tracy, Huntington, and Waterman were among the first settlers of West Farms. S:Crofut, Op. Cit., p 679
