  1. The said Nathaniel Stevens (1661-1709) was the son of William Stevens,born 1630, died 1703, and his wife Mary Meigs; married March 3, 1653. 9. The said William Stevens came from England to Guilford, Conn., in1645. NATHANIEL STEPHENS, Esq., of "Summer Hill", near Guilford, Connecticut,was eventual heir and head of the family, and inherited his father'slands at and near Guilford. In 1705 he was commissioned Lieutenant in theColonial forces in Queen Anne's War. In the commission his name isinscribed "Nathanil Stephens".1 His signature is attached to a petitionto the General Court, 1695. His will, dated October 22, 1709, was provedat New Haven, November 2 of the same year. His tombstone, formerly in theburial ground on the green in front of Yale University, has been removedwith others to the north wall of the new, so-called "Old" cemetery. Theinscription, partly obliterated, reads: LEIT. NATH ..... STEVENS, AGED48, DECEASD OCTO 22 ANO DOM 1709. From his time the family name wasusually settled in spelling as "Stevens" though the old orthography"Stephens" has never wholly ceased. Lieutenant Stephens or Stevens,married Sarah (???),2 who was born 1632, and died May 24, 1746, by whomhe had issue; I. NATHANIEL, of whom presently. II. Sarah, who married September 25, 1707, Stephen Bishop, Jr., ofGuilford. III. Elizabeth, who married May 10, 1714, Hon. John Graves, Jr., ofGuilford, and died February 10, 1725.
