Die Familie soll aus Schwäb. Gmünd stammen und wurde "Rufus" = "der Rote" genannt, 1239
Otto ist wahrscheinlich der Erste seines Namens in Ulm. Die Familie Roth (lat. 'Rufus' in den Urkunden) soll aus Schwäbisch Gmünd in Ulm eingewandert sein. Ab 1234 wurde sie in Ulm erwähnt; im 14. und 15. Jh. teilte sie sich in verschiedene Linien, eine davon nannte sich Roth von Schreckenstein, wahrscheinlich nach einer Burg, die sie als helfensteinsches Lehen innehatte. 1547 verließen die Roth von Schreckenstein Ulm, da sie katholisch zu bleiben wünschten. Sie führten im linken oberen und rechten unteren Geviert ihres Wappens ein Einhorn, ebenso als linke Helmzier
