Ernest J. Ruopp's Life in Christ
Ernie Ruopp was born in Danbury, CT, the fifth of 10 children of George and Anna Schulze Ruopp on August 31, 1915.
He received his elementary education at Immanuel Lutheran School and studied at Henry Abbott Trade School in Danbury. For many years he worked first as a mechanic and progressed to service manager at Van Houten Motors. It was there that he met Charlie Bardo. Charlie quickly introduced him to his sister, Grace, a nurse working in the New York area.
Ernie and Grace were married on October 15, 1939. They built a home and Christmas tree farm on Spruce Mountain Road in Danbury, where they lived for 52 years.
Ernie and his brother, Ted, operated Sipperly Artesian Well Co. After losing most of his right hand in a drilling accident in 1960, he worked as a maintenance engineer.
In their retirement, he loved helping Grace care for infants in their home, playing with them and telling them many creative stories.
Ernie served Immanuel Lutheran Congregation in many offices, especially as a trustee and Sunday School teacher. As a Sunday School teacher for over 30 years, he challenged hundreds of students to new levels of contemplation of God's Word and its application to their lives. He also enjoyed the Couples' Club and faithfully mimeographed the "Voice of Immanuel" for many years.
As a Boy Scout leader, he hosted numerous camp-outs, complete with original stories, on his Spruce Mountain property.
Since 1993, he's been living with his son and daughter-in-law in Raleigh, N.C., where he received dedicated and loving care.
Ernie is survived by a daughter, Sandy Clark (Dan) of Arvada, CO; a son, David E. Ruopp (Peggy) of Raleigh, N.C.; six grandchildren and three step-great-grandchildren; his sisters, Christa Lang, Lillian Bardo and Helen Ruopp; his brothers, Martin, Ted, Paul and Fred, all of the Danbury area.
Funeral services will be conducted from Immanuel Lutheran Church, West Street, Danbury, Monday morning at 10:00 with the Rev. Daniel Wehmeier, pastor, officiating.
Interment will be in Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery.
Friends may call at the Cornell Memorial Home, 247 White St., Danbury, Sunday, at a time to be announced.
