He came to America and settled in Akron, Ohio. He first introduced his oatmeal to Akron in his small general store, then to the whole U.S. with his factory. He first began production in 1856 and sold oatmeal to the Army during the Civil War. He built the Empire Barley Mill in 1863, then in 1872 built the New German Mill on the next property. He expanded the building six years later. In 1883Ferdinand built the Jumbo Mill. This was a massive eight-stories tall. He also bought a stone quarry in Peninsula, Ohio so that he could produce millstones to his own precise specs. These millstoneswere shipped the 6 or 7 miles to Akron via the Ohio Canal. In 1886 there was a disasterous fire that distroyed his factory. He acted right away and re-built. He merged with the failing Akron Milling Co. The new formation was named the F. Schumacher Milling Co. which in a few years joined others to form the American Cereal Co. Schumacher was named President at first but after conflicts with others,he was dropped in 1899. American Cereal went on to form the Quaker Oats Co. Schumacher died in 1908 at the age of 86. Quaker Oats moved from Akron in 1970. Today, his original mill buildings still stand in downtown Akron and have been restored and converted into a hotel and specialty shops known as "Quaker Square".
