CRAGUN DOUGLASS

Julia Amelia Cragun Douglass was born April 2, 1877 at 10:00 a.m. in Pleasant View, WeberCo. Utah to Wilford Elisha and Mary Ann Ellis Cragun. She was the 4th child of a pioneer family of 13 children born to them.

Her childhood days were carefree and happy on a farm where industry and thrift were taught to each child who helped with their share of the farm labors.

Her father taught his children the gospel and all went to the little country church together. The whole family was blessed with musical talents and Julia could play any song or musical number she was privileged to hear, by ear on the organ. She had a sweet soprano voice and often sang duets with her younger sister May at the church functions and funerals.

Julia was active in the different organizations and taught school in the village school house for a period of time.

Her father, whomshe loved dearly was called to fill a mission in Illinois in 1895. The saints were very unpopular at this time and were frequently persecuted. Her father Wilford was poisoned by “would be converts”. He also contracted malaria fever and was sent home arriving there and dying in August 1896, one year later. This was a great shock to all but the mother was a courageous thrifty woman believing that God watches over all. Working together they made a fair living.

Julia married George Douglass of Smithfield, Utah June 24, 1903 in the Salt Lake Temple of the Church of Jesus Christ ofLatter Day Saints. They made Smithfield home until 1910. He had a beautiful tenor voice and was a solosist for the Ogden tabernacle choir from 1910-1913.

Many happy hours were spent with family and friends entertained around the parlor organ, Sunday afternoons and evenings. With Julia furnishing the accompaniment.

He was a large well built man and worked for Cragun Wholesale Produce in Ogden.

On Dec. 23, 1913 he was pulling a crude hand elevator with produce to the top floor of the building. When the spindle lossened and the elevator with its load crashed to the basement floor crushing George. He was rushed to the Hospital but died the following day.

It was indeed a sad Christmas for those dear little children. Melba 10, Carma 8, Grant 6, Mae 4, and GeorgeLester 2 years.

This was more than Julia could handle and she went into a nervous shock. Her mother took the children in her loving care and for six years they attended the Pleasant View public school and church, then went to Weber Academy until Melba and Carma began teaching school to help the younger children and care for their mother. All have been kind and devoted to their Mother through the years.

Someone has said “Be not amazed at life; it is still the mode of God with His elect their hopes exactly to fulfill, I times and ways they least expect.

Her children are

Melba Douglass Black – born 2 May 1904

Carma Douglass Bouwers – born 11 Feb 1906

Grant Cragun Douglass – born 2 Jul 1907

Mae Douglass – born 28 Jan 1909

George Lester Douglass born 06 Jan 1912 died 9 June 1954

Julia was blessed 3 May 1877 by Cyrus Wheelock, Baptized 1 April 1885 by her father, Wilford Elisha Cragun and confirmed 3 Apr 1885 by herUncle Edward W.
