He may have been accompanied by a younger brother, John L. On September 28, the day after landing, Johannes was indentured in the courts of Philadelphia to Lazarus Widenor for four years as John Herstone because of the money (19 pounds, 18 schilling and 8 pence) owed for passage. It is believed Johannes arrived in Montgomery Co, Pennsylvania to serve his indenture. He was living there when the 1790 U.S. Census was taken. The brother, John L., whose name does not appear on the Union manifest, first appears in the 1800 U.S. Census in Fayette County, Pennsylvania. Johannes was married twice, first in 1780 to Catherine Schantz with whom he had 7 children and, after her demise, to Eva Reiff in 1793 with whom he had 6. Johannes was a devout Mennonite and was instrumental inthe establishment in 1803 of the chapel illustrated above which bears his name. He and Eva are buried in the churchyard.
