Sohn des Jakob Schäffer, Kaufmann in Halle. Der Großvater hieß Johann und stammte aus Mainz. Urgroßvater Peter war Goldschreiber in Paris und Gehilfe Gutenbergs. Dieser war verheiratet mit Christina Faust, eine Tochter des Johann Faust + 1466/1467, Rechtsgelehrter zu Mainz und Geschäftsteilhaber Gutenbergs.
