Elizabeth (Betty) Jane MELCHI

SSN: 313-14-8303. Betty J. Terveer, died Thursday, March 10, 2005 at 5:10 a.m. at Adams Memorial Hospital after an illness of several months. Born in Decatur on May 31, 1923 to Russell & Viola (Bowman) Melchi, she married David F. Terveer on June 18, 1949. She was a graduate of Decatur H.S. where she was a cheerleader. She was a former society editor for the Decatur Daily Democrat for 9 years and was a volunteer teaching assistant and girls volleyball coach at Decatur Catholic High School. While the family lived in Fort Wayne, she served on the Fort Wayne CYO Board, was a girls athletic coach at St. Henry Catholic School, and was vice-president of the Newcomers Club. After school consolidation she worked as guidance department secretary at Bellmont High School for 17 years. She was a member of the St. Marys Catholic Church, the Women of the St. Marys, Adams County Historical Society, and was past president and honorary member of Psi Iota Xi Sorority. She was a longtime and avid golfer and in 2002 was honored by the Decatur Cross Creek Womens Golf Association as its Honorary Golfer of the Year. She was a great supporter of St. Joseph School and Bellmont High School athletic programs and she enjoyed attending year-round sporting events. She was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother and she took great pride in her family and grandchildren. Betty is survived by her husband of 55 years David Terveer of Decatur, 3 children, Dr. Michael (Paige) Terveer of Lima, Ohio, Liz Terveer of Fort Wayne, and Pat (Ginny) Terveer of Decatur. Also surviving are 6 grandchildren, Mrs. Sebastian (Adrienne) Ranly, Kelley, Taylor and Carrie Terveer, all of Decatur and Abbi & Tyler Terveer of Lima, Ohio and several nieces and nephews. A brother William Melchi preceded her in death. Prayer service will be at 9:20 am Monday, March 14, 2005 at Haggard & Sefton Funeral Home followed by a 10:00 am Mass of Christian Burial at St. Marys of the Assumption Catholic Church. Father Philip DeVolder will be officiating and burial will be in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery.
