Notes for this person
In 1852, Heinrich von Thun (born in Bockel, Hannover, 1824) and Gerd H.H. Hillmann (born in Bensen, Hannover, 1837) migrated to London (from Hamburg on the "Princess Royal") along with other members of the von Thun family including Heinrich’s brother, Peter. The men were all sugar bakers. Gerd Hillmann and Hinrich von Thun worked in the Hall & Boyd refinery at Breezers Hill in the St George-in-the-East area of Stepney, while Peter probably also worked in the same refinery.
Heinrich von Thun was naturalised British on 27th May 1865 following at least 20 years residence in the UK (which means that his first immigration was in 1845 or earlier): naturalisation certificate No.3609. This automatically also naturalised his dependants, his wife and daughter, though no evidence has yet been found of their arrival in England.
The London Gazette records Heinrich von Thun as a shareholder in the Alliance Bank: clearly he was saving and investing at least a part of his earnings.
