Hermann Eduard "Edward" SCHOLZ

HERMANN EDUARD SCHOLZ was born at Breslau, the capitalofSilesia, on 21st March, 1842. He was the youngest member ofthefamily when they migrated to Australia in 1845. He spenthischildhood days at hi s parents home at Light Pass. He hadthehonour of being in hte last class confirmed by Pastor Kavel,thefirst Lutheran prastor to come to Australia, who arrivedwiththe first band of Lutheran immigran ts in 1838. In 1866HermannEduard migrated to Jindera in N.S.W. with his parentsandyounger members of his family. In those early days wheneligiblefemales were rather scarce, it is said that the Kalm shouseholdat Jindera was a centre of unusual attraction, forthere livedfour young ladies of just the right age and quality,to put athrob into the heart of pining young bachelors. WhethertheSchol z lads were particulary persuasive, or just the righttype,or just staked an early claim, we cannot tell, but two ofthemclaimed Kalms girls as their wives. On 22nd April, 1869,HermannEduard marrie d Amalie Pauline Kalms at Jindera. She hadbeenborn at Blumberg, S.A. on 11th May, 1849. He selected aproperty"Waterview" on the outskirts of Walla Walla where hespent theremainder of his life. In 1 873 when he selected theoriginalland it covered only 40 acres, but over the years itwasextended to a size of 1200 acres. Eduard worked thepropertyuntil 1915, when it was taken over by his younges t son,Joseph.Like most of the Scholz'a Eduard was a lover of horses,and itis said that the first race meeting at Walla was held onhisproperty. In later life he is said to have suffered from aheart complaint, and was warned by his doctor not to drive orride ahorse. However, he continued to do so and outlived by manyyearsthe doctor who gave him this warning. His wife died on29thOctober, 1907 . On 10th February, 1910 he remarried, hissecondwife being Karoline Eina Graumann (nee Yindera), aschoolteacher, the daughter of Jospeh Yindera and his wifeJohanneNespor, who had been born at Staus sey, about 1859. Therewere nochildren from this marriage. Periodically the wholefamily wouldgather at the parental home for a get-together whenmany a tallstory was told. Eduard was a faithful and i nterestedsupporterof his church throughout his long life. He served asthechairman of the Committee of Management of theWallacongregation from 1898-1902 and again from 1907-1909. Hedied atWalla Wal la on 30th January, 1937, two months short ofhis 96thbirthday. His second wife had predeceased him on 19thJanuary,1936. Eduard and both wives are buried at Walla Walla.Therewere twelve children fro m his first marriage, 10 sons and2daughters.
