Birth: Apr. 13, 1848 Death: Feb. 14, 1928 Wall Diffenderfer Mortuary records Topeka Daily Capital, Wed., Feb. 15, 1928, page 3: PIONEER WOMAN DEAD Went to State Normal When School Was in Log House Mrs. Oxanna Clary Challis, 79, pioneer resident of Kansas, died at her home, 1100 West Euclid avenue, yesterday morning. She was born in Wayne county, Ind., April 13, 1848, and came to Kansas in 1856. Her father, Henry Hiatt, was an ardent abolitionist and maintained an underground railroad for runaway slaves during the Civil war. Mrs. Challis attended the state normal at Emporia when the school was in a log house and afterward was a teacher during the early Kansas school days. In 1868 she married Walter S. Challis, who died in 1913. She was a member of the Lincoln circle and the Lottie A. Case W.C.T.U. She was mother of six children, three of whom are living, Alvah P. Challis, Harvey B. Challis, and Mrs. Edna L. Crow, all of Topeka and is preceeded in death by her son Ford Foster Challis. She also is survived by two sisters, Mrs. Wegie Lacefield, Pueblo, Colo., and Lena Leota Kennedy, Lawrence; three brothers: Theran G. Hiatt, Lone Star, Kan.; Clyde and Alic O. Hiatt, Twin Mounds, Kan.; four grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Funeral services will be at the Wall-Diffenderfer mortuary at 10 o'clock Thursday morning. Her body will lie in state at the mortuary from this afternoon until 9:30 o'clock Thursday morning. Burial will be in Twin Mounds cemetery, near Richland.
