Moest van zijn vader in de advocatuur, maar wilde dat niet en werd zeeman op de grote vaart.
Opgeklommen van matroos tot chef hofmeester en na 28 jaar op de grote vaart te zijn geweest heeft hij van wege gezondsheidsredenen een baan op de vaste wal geaccepteerd. In de eerste jaren van het varen is hij kort getrouwd geweest en heeft 2 kinderen uit dat huweljk geecht.
Later leerde hij via een contactadvertentie Elisabeth Brand kennen en zijn getrouwd. Zij was ook eerder getrouwd geweest en had 2 zonen uit dat huwelijk.
