John Adam Roush Birth: 1711 - Darmstadt, Stadtkreis Darmstädt, Hessen, Germany Death: 19 Oct 1786 (aged 74–75) - New Market, Shenandoah County, Virginia, USA Burial: Saint Marys Pine Church Cemetery, Mount Jackson, Shenandoah County, Virginia, USA Memorial ID: 14655408 ORIGINAL GERMAN NAME: JOHANNES ADAM RAUSCH Born Johannes Adam Rausch in Hessen, Darmstadt, Germany, the son of Johann Nicholas and Anna Catherine Alberts Rausch. He died October 19, 1786 near New Market in Shenandoah Co, VA. His wife was Susannah Sehler. Johann Adam Rausch sailed from Rotterdam and arrived in Philadelphia, PA on Oct 19, 1736 on the Brigantine John of Perth Amboy where he was qualified, taking the oath of Faith and Fidelity in Pennsylvania on that date at the courthouse. In 1739 he was married to Susannah Schlern/Sehler in Philadelphia. Shortly after, he and Susannah migrated to the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. Upon arriving in what was then Frederick County, they settled on the banks of Mill Creek where Johann was a farmer, a mill owner and a tanner. John Adam Roush, his nine sons, and three son-in-laws all did service during the Revolutionary War. Up to modern times no one has found a family that contributed this kind of service. He has been recognized by the Sons of the American Revolution and the Daughters of the American Revolution for his public service to the cause of Freedom in America. Record Ref: Johan Adam Rausch listed among passengers; At the Courthouse of Philadia, October 19th, 1736. Thirty seven Foreigners, from the Palatinate, who, with their Families, making in all one hundred and ten persons, were imported here in the Brigantine John, of Perth Amboy, George Frazer, Master, from Rotterdam, but last from Dover, as by Clearance thence, were this day qualified as usual." From the Minutes of the Provincial Council, printed in Colonial Records, Vol. IV, p. 99f. This is the lastentry in the minutes of the Provincial Council regarding immigrants. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ "These are the times that try men’s souls. The summer soldier and the sunshine patriot will, in this crisis, shrink from the service of their country; but he that stands it now, deserves the love and thanks of man and woman. Tyranny like hell is not easily conquered yet we have this consolation with us, the harder the conflict, the more glorious the triumph. What we obtain too cheap, we esteem too lightly; it is dearness only that gives everything its value." -- Tom Paine after the Declaration of Independence ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Link to John Adam Roush's original grave at Old Pine Church Cemetery where his mortal remains still lie: Family links: Parents: Johann Nicholas Rausch (1673 - 1723) Anna Catherine Alberts Rausch (1673 - 1711) Spouse: Susannah Sehler Roush (1713 - 1796)* Children: Lewis Johannes Roush (1740 - 1816)* Phillip Roush (1741 - 1820)* John Roush (1742 - 1816)* Mary Magdalene Roush Zirkle (1746 - 1815)* Balser Roush (1746 - 1845)* Jacob Roush (1746 - 1830)* Eleanor Roush Waddell (1752 - 1827)* Henry Roush (1752 - 1831)* Daniel Roush (1754 - 1832)* Elizabeth Rausch Nehs (1758 - 1832)* George Roush (1761 - 1845)* Jonas Roush (1763 - 1850)* *Calculated relationship Inscription: 1711-John Adam Roush-1786 EMIGRANT FROM DARMSTADT, GERMANY, 1736 EARLY SETTLER OF THE SHENANDOAH VALLEY 1713 -HIS WIFE, SUSANNAH- 1796 PARENTS OF NINE SONS WHO SERVED THEIR COUNTY IN THE CAUSE OF INDEPENDENCE. 1741-PHILIP ROUSH-1820 1742-HENRY ROUSH-1831 1743-JOHN ROUSH-1815 1746-JACOB ROUSH-1830 1749-DANIEL ROUSH-1832 1753-ELEANOR ROUSH WADDELL-1827 MARY MAGDELNE ROUSH ZIRKLE 1758-ELIZABETH ROUSH NEASE-1831 1761-GEORGE ROUSH-1845 1763-JONAS ROUSH-1850 THEIR DESCENDANTS LIVING AND DEAD NUMBER ABOUT 40,000 AMERICAN CITIZENS.
