On Dec 31 1816 she married Lazarus Hawkins in Stokes Co., NC. Records of their marriage can be found in the county court at Danbury NC. His Bondsman was Henry Petree. Margaretha Petree gave birth to thirteen children. They were all born in Stokes Co., NC: Alexander Hawkins 1818–1822 and Dolly Hawkins 1819–1822, they died as small children; William H. Hawkins 1820–1883, in 1847 he married Lucretia Padgett in Stokes NC., and died in Rogersville, Hawkins Co., TN.; Henretta Hawkins 1821–1822, she died when she was about one year old.; Solomon James Hawkins1822–1892, on Feb 7 1845 he married Mary James in Stokes Co., N.C. records at County Court in Danbury, NC.; Noah Hawkins 1827–1912, on Nov 17, 1847 he married Elizabeth Padgett in Stokes Co., N.C.bondsman Rewben T Moore, Witness C H Nelson, Bond #000139197, he died in Smyth Co., VA.; Emily Ann Hawkins 1832–1898, On Jan 6, 1860 she married William M. Price in Hawkins Co. TN. she died in Hawkins Co.; Eleanor J. Hawkins 1834–1870. On Feb 9, 1861 she married Isaac Mayfield in Hawkins Co., TN.; Elizabeth J. Hawkins 1837–1865, On Jul 11 1859 she married Samuel M Green; Helen 0r Ellen Hawkins 1837; John C. Hawkins or Joel 1839–1871, he married Louisa Ann Shanks; Roman McNeal Hawkins 1844–1921, on Dec. 23, 1877 he married Mary Jane Harrell in Hawkins Co, TN, He is buried in the Tulare, CA cemetery.; and Lazarus Fountain Hawkins 1847–1842. Before the 1850 census the family moved to rural Marion, Smyth Co. VA. Their married sons, William H. Hawkins, his wife Trecy and two children, Elizabeth and Oliver Washington, and his newly married son, Solomon James Hawkins and wife, Mary, also moved to rural Marion, Smyth Co VA. They all lived as neighbors, and attended the St. Clair's Bottom Church. On-line church records show that, on Oct. 101846, Betsy was received by, Experience and Baptism, into the Membership of the St. Clair's Bottom Church. Her oldest son, William Franklin Hawkins, was 7 years old when his Grandma "Betsy" died. He said that he could remember his grandma. They would go to visit her and she would always have something goodfor him to eat. He remembered when she died, and going to the Church to bury her. It was a sad occasion in the year of 1855, when the family gathered at the church for the funeral service of their dear beloved Wife, Mother and Grandma, Margaretha Elizabeth "Betsy" Petree Hawkins. With tears in their eyes they witnessed her body lowered in her final resting place in the Saint Clair Bottom Primitive Baptist Churchyard where she "Rests in Peace".
