Notes for this person

In 1071 his uncle William the Conquieror made him count palatine of Chester 'to hold as freely by the Sword as the king himself held the kingdom of England by the Crown.' Having founded the Abbeys of St. Sever inNormandy and St. Werburg at Chester, besides largely endowing that of Whitby, he became a monk on 23 July 1101 and died 27 July 1101 at St. Werburg's.
