Notes for this person

Filiation incertaine.

Her father may well have been Thorold the Sheriff of Spalding, Lincs and many other manors.

Although there is much confusion about Lucia's ancestry in earlier writings, contemporary historians tend to believe that she was the daughterof Thorold, sheriff of Lincoln, by a daughter of William Malet (died 1071). It appears to be accepted however that Lucia was descended from Alfgar 'the Saxon', ealdorman of Mercia, even if the precise genealogy is not clear. This descent came either from Lucia's father or from William Malet's mother. She inherited a huge group of estates centred on Spalding in Lincolnshire, probably inherited from both the Lincoln and theMalet family. This group of estates has come to be called the "Honourof Bolingbroke". Leo van de Pas.
