Mary O'NEIL

Married 16 July 1854 to Anton Cayo, born Canada to David & Francoise Cayo, residence Mishicot; she was daughter of James Michael and Mary O'Neil; married at Manitowoc Rapids (Co Mar Index v. 1 page 39) ------------------ Sawyer County Record October 31, 1918 Mrs. Antone Cayo died Tuesday October 29, 1918. On Nov. 1 she would have been 86 years of age. Early last week, Mrs. Cayo, in falling in her son's kitchen, sustained a broken hip, the result and shock of which ended her long and useful life. Mrs. Cayo was born in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada on Nov. 1, 1833, and came to Wisconsin at the age of 15. She was married to Antone Cayo at Manitowoc Rapids, Wisconsin, July 16, 1854. She and her husband, now deceased, came to this city on April 18, 1882, thirty-six years ago, and they were the first family in Hayward. Besides 35 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren she leaves 10 children to mourn her loss. They are: Joe Cayo, Nickerson, MN; Jim Cayo, Portland, OR; Mrs. A. Searle, Superior, WI; Edd. Cayo, Solon Springs, WI; Jack Cayo, Jim Falls, WI; George Cayo, Will Cayo, Mrs. I.C. Phillips, all of Portland, OR; Mrs. Dan McQuarry, Fort Atkinson, WI; Oma Cayo, Hayward. Those attending the funeral are: Mrs. Anna Searle of Superior and daughter Mrs. A.E. Barton, Edd. Cayo of Solon Springs; Joe Cayo, Mrs. Mary Cayo, Mrs. Edd. Cayo, all of Duluth, MN; Mrs. Dan McQuarry, of Fort Atkinson, WI. Mrs. Cayo might appropriately be called the "Mother of Hayward." The old settlers of this city remember with gratitude her deeds of friendship and motherly kindness to them when they also came as pioneers to make homes for themselves in the wilderness. The pioneers who during their early struggles for existence here have not at some time accepted the hospitality of this noble woman. Loved and honored, a woman most illustrious in noble words and undying deeds, warm-hearted and generous, has been summoned by the Eternal King. Our people will long hold her in kindly remembrance, for the history of her life is closely interwoven with the history of Hayward and county. Funeral services were held from the home (Friday) afternoon, Father Gordon officiating. The entire community extends sympathy to relatives in this deep hour of grief.
