Notes for this person

In order to impress other countries, especially Japan, with American naval prowess, President Theodore Roosevelt ordered 16 battleships of the Atlantic Fleet to sail around the world. Popularly known as the Great White Fleet, the ships left Hampton Roads, Virginia on 16 December 1907, made call at 20 ports on six continents and returned to Hampton Roads on 22 February 1909. The USS Louisiana was part of this Fleet. Herbert Heinzmann sailed aboard the Louisiana from Hampton Roads to California and, probably, completed the circumnavigation. Herbert Heinzmann signed his name Herbert C. Heinzmann.
