Notes for this person

An interesting article appeared in the Vermilion News about Mary Bachmann Ackerman. The copy I hacve is not dated so I'm not sure whether it appeared aropund the time of her death ornot. The article said she was born and grew to Kirchberg Germany about fifteen miles from Cassell. It goes on to say "To the children of those days life was made up principaly of school. >Fromthe age of six to fourteen it was their business to attend school.Only two weeks vacation was allowed and that was in the summer. Mrs Ackerman was more fortunate than most as she started at the age of five and continued till the age of fifteen, thus giving her two more years than most of her companions".

"To her Christmas was celebrated as more of a religious holiday. In fact, religious services about filled the week and New Years was more a gift day. Their homes were situated in a village with farms extending back. One man in the village whowas wealthier than the others, usually had a Christmas tree which everybody went to see and enjoy."

"The times of festivities in her girlhood days came in November and lasted a week. Only absolutely necessary labor was performed and feasting and pleasuremaking was the order of the days." It goes on to say"Mrs. Ackerman crossed the ocean when a young woman and was married a few months later, and for fifty years has made her home on the banks of old Lake Erie. The house faces the lake. Once upon a time the road passed between the house and thelake, but the water swallowed up the old road more than half century ago and the new road, now all cement pavement, passes the residence several rods to the rear. She has watched times change too, for where she once looked out on forest. she now looks upon beautiful summer homes filled with life and laughter during the summer season. We are glad to be able to present to our readers the above picture of this honored resident of West Vermilion."

Another article noted the following people who attended her funeral, Mr. & Mrs C D Williams, Mrs. A C Pretzer, Mr & Mrs C Alheit,Mr. & Mrs. Adam Lapp of Sandusky, Mrs. George Bachman of Lakewood and Mrs John Berry of Lorain. Buried Maple Grove Cemetery
