Rosina SANDAU

The family was poor, so they stayed in Russia. After Rosina had her fourth child, tragedy befelled the family. Andreas and the oldest girl one day were playing with matches and she was severely burned. Soon thereafter she died. Jacob was grief struck and before too long he also died. This left Rosina a widow with 3 small children and no income. Being frail herself and upset emotionally, she no doubt couldn't provide enough nutrition for the baby and then the baby died. The two surviving children, Andreas and Magdalena, she managed to rear until Andreas was almost 16 and Magdalena was about 9,when she died. No one knows who raised the children. Both married at age 21. Magdalena and Emanuel Schettle immigrated to Argentina in 1907. About the same time Andreas's uncle, Gottlieb Sandau, in the United States sent him money to come to Klum, North Dakota, which he and his family then accepted. After 5 years in Argentina, Magdalena left and immigrated to Alberta, Canada in 1912. When Andreasheard about their move, he and his family then left North Dakota to join them.
