Notes for this person

Heinrich immigrated to the USA in 1870 with his parents and siblings. He was 12. He went by the name "Henry" in the USA. This is confusing because his father apparently used the name Henry as well.On the passenger list of the vessel Liepzig in 1870 his full name was listed as Heinrich Wilhelm Ferdinand Struckmann.

Henry married Mary Humbrecht in Hampshire, Illinois, in 1885. The marriage was performed by Pastor Carl Kurz of St Paul's Church in Elgin. The witnesses were Fred Struckman (Henry's brother) and Julia Struckman (probably Henry's adopted sister who would have been about 17 at the time). Henry was 27 and Mary was 22.

Henry was a carpenter and a builder of large barns. He died tragically at age 38 as the result of falling off the roof of a barn when the scaffolding gave way. The accident occurred near or on his brother Charles' farm in Dundee Township, Kane County and Henry was taken to Charles' house where he died a few days later. He left a widow and four young sons. He is buried in Bluff City cemetery, Elgin. Several newspaper articles describing the accident and it's aftermath are contained in STRUCKMAN FAMILY HISTORY BINDER IC--THE IMMIGRANTS.

When he died, Henry was a well known building contractor and senior partner in the firm of Struckman & Heine.
