<p>Family changed name to Haeger from Hoeger in USA.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>Migration route: October 1909 left village in Russia to Libau, Russia, boarded ship SS Athenia in Glasgow and docked in the portbia, S Russia, Ukraine. He married Katherina Schock (born June 17, 1874 in Russia), the daughter of Christoph and Christina (nee Hein) Schock.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>Jacob farmed while in Russia, but hismain job was shoemaking. They lived in the village of Jakobstal, Bessarabia where 9 children were born, six of whom died there (these were all girls and included a set of twins).</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>InOctober of 1909, Jacob, his wife Katherina and three children: Reinhold (my father) who was 17, Christina 15, and Emma 5, came into the United States via Canada. They left from Libau, Russia and boarded the ship S.S. Athenia`in Glasgow and docked in the port of Halifax. They then took the Canadian Pacific Railroad to Detroit, MI. The ship3 record shows that they were all in the ship3 hospital - most likely all of them suffered from seasickness. (Katherina was also pregnant at the time.) Their destination was Harvey, North Dakota where their son, Rudolph was born in November of 1909 (he stillpoints out that If they had arrived later, he may have been born on the ship, making him a man without a countryn) They also added another son (Israel b. 3-23-1912 Harvey, ND, d. 1-5-1994 Stockton, CA) and daughter (Esther b. 12-11-1914 Harvey, ND, still living in Lodi, CA).</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>Jacob3 parents, Johann W. Hoeger (b. 12-26-1846 Russia, d. 1928 Lodi, CA) and Katrina (nee Fuller/ Fueller) Hoeger (b. 4-9-1852 Borodino, d. 7-1-1922 Twin Township, SD) came to the United States previously (1905). The following brothers of Jacob also arrived in the U.S. earlier:</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>1. John J. Hoeger b. 5-27-1877 Borodino, d. 11-14-1918 Reeder, ND m. Othiella Marks, 2nd wife was Cathryne Bitzer Arrived in Halifax, Canada 4-10-1903, then immigrated to the U.S. March 15, 1904</p><p>2. Gottlieb Hoeger b. 7-10-1888, d. 1960 m. Frieda Martin. Gottlieb, Frieda and daughter Emma arrived in the U.S. December 1905 on the ship Stadendam`which sailed from Rotterdam and docked in New York.</p><p>3. Daniel Hoeger b. 1899 Russia, d. 1955 Lodi, CA. m. Lydia Baumback. On his Declaration of Intention his birth is shown as December instead of September.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>Jacob farmed while in Russia, but his main job was making shoes. In books showing Hoeger/Hager/Heger/Hoger, there are many living in the same house, even some who are not direct ancestors.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>Jacob, his wife Katherina, Reinhold, Christina, and Emma left by ship, the SS Athenia out of Glasgow and docked in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. Reinhold was 17, Christina 15, and Emma was 5. They took the Canadian Pacific Railroad to the portof Detroit on or about October 10, 1909. While aboard the ship, they spent time in the ships hospital-probably from seasickness. Katherina was also pregnant. Their final destination was Harvey, ND. Rudolph, Israel and Esther were born in North Dakota. Six children died either at birth or shortly thereafter while they were still in Russia. Among them was a set of twins, one died at birth and the other shortly after.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>There were two steamships named ATHENIA, both owned by the Donaldson Line, which operated from Glasgow to ports in Canada and the US. The earlier ATHENIA, which ws launched in 1903 as a cargo steamer and first sailed as a passenger steamer in 1903, was torpedoed and sunk by German submarines U-53 in August 1917.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>On January 28, 1913 Jacob Hoeger filled out the Declaration of Intention to become a citizen and denounced the Czar of all the Russias. Jacob was 5ft 6 1/2iches tall and weighed 160 lbs according to naturalization papers. Jacob farmed and repaired shoes mostly for his family. Jacob farmed in North Dakota until the fall of 1927 when they moved to Ralph, SD, which is about 28 miles away from Reeder, ND.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>1910census April 13, 1910 (Ruseland Township, Wells County) shows:</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>Jakob Hoeger-38, Katie-35, Reinholt-17, Christina-15, Emma-5, Rudolph-6 1/2. It also shows that they had 10 children (4 living) Living with them is Henry Seiler-20 born in SD, Louisa-21 born Russia. Louisa has to be John W. Hoeger's daughter, However, the age is suspect as she is shown as being born in 1885. She is shown as marrrying Henry Sayler.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>January 6, 1920 census (Lynn, Wells County) shows "Hager"</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>Jacob-48, Katie-45, Emma-15, Rudolph-10, Israel-7, Ester-5.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>Jacob's second paper, or Petition for Naturalization is dated 1917 and shows birth dates of all of the living children.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>Jacob's brothers and parents immigrated to the US before Jacob and his family came over in 1909.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>Obituray Lodi News Sentinel Saturday July 7, 1951:</p><p>&nbsp;</p>Jacob Hoeger 519 S. Washington St. passed away Friday morning in Stockton Hospital. Hoeger, 79, came to Lodi 15 years ago when he retired from farming in Ralph, SD. A native of South Russia, he was the husband of the late Katherine Hoeger. Surviving are the sons ReinholdHoeger of Toppenish, WA, Rudolph of Eureka, SD, and Israel Hoeger of Lodi, daughters Mrs. Esther Brennies and Emma Hoeger of Lodi, and Christina Free of Milton-Freewater, OR. He was the brother of Gottlieb and Daniel Hoeger of Lodi. Also surviving are 26 grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday July 11, in the church of God, Seventh Day Adventist, at the corner of Vine andWashington Street. Interment is to be in Cherokee Memorial Park.
